Biography

Dr. Gwen Atkinson-Williams is the fifth woman and fourth black woman to serve as city commissioner. She is a native of Brunswick and is a graduate of Glynn Academy High School. She is a Georgia certified teacher who has 30+ years of public education experience all within the Glynn County Public Schools teaching 27 years in high school and 4 years in middle school. She is certified in the state of Georgia to teach Middle Grades Education in the areas of math, science, and social studies, Secondary Science, and Healthcare Science. She is also certified in Education Leadership. In addition to teaching in public education, she has taught as an Adjunct Professor in the College of Education at Savannah State University, Georgia’s oldest HBCU, as a Middle Grades Science Instructor. 

She has a plethora of education. She earned two associate degrees from Brunswick College, one in Business Administration with a concentration in accounting and one in Medical Laboratory Technology in which she is certified by the American Society of Clinical Pathology as a Medical Laboratory Technician. She earned a B.S. in Middle Grades Education from Armstrong State College and earned a M.Ed. in Secondary Science Education, an Ed.S. in Educational Leadership, and an Ed.D. in Educational Leadership all from Georgia Southern University. While earning her higher degrees and working as an educator, she worked PRN as a MLT for 22 years within the laboratory at Southeast Georgia Health System Brunswick Campus.

In addition to being an educator, she has served and currently serving in various civic organizations within the community holding various leadership roles like Marshes of Glynn Girl Scouts, Brunswick Alumnae of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., Brunswick NAACP, and Glynn County Association of Educators. Also, she is a member of First Jordan Grove Missionary Baptist Church.

She is married to Mr. Schuler Williams, Jr., and they have two adult daughters, Sierra (Chef) and Jazmine who are educators as well, and two granddaughters, Avoria and Siarria.
