Government
Mission
The City of Brunswick’s mission is to provide a well-managed, open, and responsive government steered by professionals committed to providing quality services to every individual we serve.
Vision
The City of Brunswick aspires to be a safe and welcoming coastal community where families settle, visitors make memories, and businesses thrive.
Background
The City of Brunswick has a Commission-Manager form of government, which combines the political leadership of elected officials with the professional expertise of a City Manager. The Board of City Commissioners consist of five elected citizens, two from the south ward, two from the north ward, and one from the City at-large (the Mayor).
Each year one City Commissioner assumes the role of Mayor Pro Tem, acting in place of the Mayor in their absence. Together this five-member body sets forth policy, adopts the annual budget, and governs the health, safety, and welfare of the community.
Vacancies & Term Limits
If for any reason a commission seat becomes vacant, the City Commission will call an election to fill such vacancy. (Enacted by 1920 Ga. Laws, pp. 757, 777, as amended by O.C.G.A. §§ 21-3-14, 21-3-53.)
Currently, the Mayor can serve a maximum of two 2 consecutive terms. Each term is four years and the Mayor must wait 3 years following their second term before they can run as Mayor in subsequent elections. City Commissioners can serve an unlimited number of terms.
