Boards and Commissions

Public Meeting at Old City Hall

Background & Purpose

The City Commission has the statutory authority to create boards, committees, commissions, and authorities to fulfill any investigative, advisory or administrative function which the Commission deems necessary and can establish the composition, duties and powers thereof by ordinance or resolution as may be appropriate. Therefore, a board or commission may be entirely voluntary (such as the Tree Board) or operate as its own entity (such as the Housing Authority) requiring paid staff to function.

Why Join a Board?

Boards, commissions, authorities, and advisory committees play a vital role in local government. Volunteer members of a board, authority, committee or commission lend their knowledge, skill and expertise in ways that not only improve our City, but provide meaningful oversight  from residents and community members. The work of a volunteer member ensures that City staff and Elected Officials not only hear and see the people, but uphold public interest through active participation. With nearly a dozen active boards and commissions there are numerous ways to get involved!
