Purpose & Background

The goal of the Historic Preservation Board is to establish procedures for processing applications for certificates of appropriateness for (1) any changes in the external appearance of existing structures; (2) design of new structures; (3) demolition of landmarks and existing structures within designated historic districts; and (4) protection and preservation of historic sites and features.

About Historic Preservation

The Old Town neighborhood of Brunswick was listed on the National Register of Historic Places as a Historic District in April of 1979. Residents of the area lobbied the City of Brunswick for a historic preservation ordinance and in 1999 the Mayor and Commission of the City of Brunswick passed ordinance number 939, creating the Brunswick Historic Preservation Board (BHPB).
