Neighborhood and Community Services

Background

The Neighborhood and Community Services Department (NCS) works to build healthy and successful neighborhoods and households through community problem solving, funding human services, and partnering with community members to facilitate safe, clean, and attractive neighborhoods.

The Department of Neighborhood and Community Services offers programs such as the Community Development Block Grant Program (CDBG) funded through the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).  These funds are designed to provide:

  • Suitable Living Conditions
  • Strengthen Older Neighborhoods
  • Removal of Slum & Blighted Areas (Demolition)
  • Minor/Major Housing Rehabilitation (MMH)
  • Public Services (i.e. local organizations, 501(c)3's etc.)
  • Public Facilities (ex. sidewalks, parking lots, infrastructure etc.)

Each program is intended to encourage the self-sufficiency of the recipients, stabilize and strengthen older neighborhoods, and promote a safe, healthy and prosperous Brunswick. Through our partnerships with local public service agencies, we seek to strengthen community outreach to those affected by abuse, homelessness, and fragmented families.

The Department of Neighborhood and Community Services coordinates with Neighborhood Planning Assemblies (NPAs) which are grassroots neighborhood organizations that encourage residents to actively participate in their City Government. There are six NPA's:

  • Goodyear
  • Historic Brunswick
  • Magnolia/College Park
  • Midtown
  • Tri-Area
  • Urbana/Perry Park

The Department of Neighborhood and Community Services oversees the operations of the Roosevelt Harris Jr. Senior Citizens Center. Please click on their respective webpages for more specific information.
