Historic Oak Grove Cemetery c. 1838

Oak Grove Cemetery is Brunswick's first public cemetery.  Capt Douglas Risley, the founder of the city's first school for African Americans in 1867, is buried at this site.  Oak Grove Cemetery also serves as the final resting place for more than 100 Confederate and Union soldiers.

To Modify or Add to Your Lot:

Oak Grove Cemetery is designated as a local historic site under the direction of the Brunswick Historic Preservation Board (BHPB).  Plot owners seeking to make changes and/or additions to their plot must contact BHPB at City Hall, 601 Gloucester Street, Brunswick, GA 31520, and  apply for a Certificate of Appropriateness (C.O.A.).  The application shall include detailed information regarding the requested changes. It shall be up to the discretion of the BHPB to approve or reject any or all of the changes in accordance with these guidelines.

Cemetery Lots for Sale - Oak Grove Cemetery Annex

The City of Brunswick currently has 250 cemetery lots (4' X 12') for sale in the Historic Oak Grove Cemetery Annex.  These lots will be sold on a "first come", "first served basis" (limited to six (6) per customer) at $1000 each.

Vertical headstones are allowed, but must be inset 6" from the front, back and side edges of the lot. Headstones must be placed on a stone or concrete base that is level with the ground. No coping will be permitted. These lots may only be resold to the City of Brunswick for the original purchase amount.

To purchase a cemetery lot bring a check or money order only (cash is not accepted) to the Cemetery Office located at City Hall.
