Community Orchards

Community Orchard Banner

Background

A patchwork of community orchards is being woven across the City of Brunswick in the form of citrus groves. Planted in high pedestrian traffic areas across the City, when mature, the resulting citrus fruit are free for passersby to pick and enjoy. In 2018 the original grove was planted near the Howard Coffin Park walking track with subsequent orchard installations thereafter.

Brunswick Community Orchards have been funded via:

  • Keep Georgia Beautiful Foundation Community Orchards Grant
  • BB&T now Truist / Lighthouse giving program
  • Keep America Beautiful / UPS tree planting grant
  • Georgia ReLeaf Grant

A true community partnership, Keep Golden Isles Beautiful (KGIB): coordinates the effort and secures funding, Coastal Greenery: sources plants and fertilizes the trees, Golden Isles Fund for Trees (GIFT): presents the planting day educational program and and tree signage, and the City of Brunswick: provides the land and ongoing tree maintenance.
