The department recognizes members for exceptional performance that is above and beyond the normal call of duty through formal recognition. Citizens are encouraged to inform the department about a service they have received or witnessed that is worthy of recognition. Categories of Awards

Written Commendations

Award available to sworn and non-sworn personnel. It shall be given in cases where employees have performed their duties in a manner which surpasses what is normally expected.  Presentation of the written commendation will be made by the Chief of Police.

Officer of the Quarter, Officer of the Year
Civilian of the Half-Year, Civilian of the Year

The Officer of the Quarter and the Civilian of the Half-Year Award is given to departmental employees who, while in the performance of their duties, performs a notable act of service, excels in their job performance, or brings honorable recognition to the department. Nominations are made by supervisory personnel.

The Officer of the Year and the Civilian of the Year Awards are chosen from the current year’s quarterly and bi-annually awarded recipients. The Chief of Police is responsible for the final selection of both awards. The employees are awarded individual plaques, a gift certificate, and have their names and photographs displayed on a departmental plaque.

Life Saving Award

The Life Saving Award is granted to any member of the department who, while in the performance of his or her duties, performs an act which directly saves another human life without jeopardizing the member’s life. The recipient of this award receives a ribboned medal and an award bar presented by the Chief of Police in the presence of the entire department.

Lt. Artie Davis Medal of Valor Award

The Medal of Valor is granted to any member of the department who, in the face of great imminent personal danger, knowingly and purposely performs an act above and beyond the call of duty or for the saving of a human life at extreme risk to the member’s own life or safety. The recipient receives a ribboned medal and an award bar. The award is bestowed by the Chief of Police in the presence of the entire police department.

The posthumous awarding of the Medal of Valor is made to the family of a member of the department who has given his or her life in the line of duty.
